A BEUTAHFUL TOURS × BEDROCK HOMESTEAD EXPERIENCE

GRAND STAIRCASE HOMESTEAD CAVE HOUSE & BACKCOUNTRY TOUR

— Two nights inside a home carved from red sandstone

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS   •   PRIVATE TOUR   •   ROUND TRIP FROM SALT LAKE CITY   •   GUIDED BACKCOUNTRY HIKING

IT'S A HOUSE. IT'S A CAVE.

— WELCOME TO THE ROCK HOUSE

A HOME BLASTED OUT OF A SANDSTONE DOME

Deep in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, outside the tiny town of Boulder, Utah, homesteader Grant Johnson spent decades digging a house straight into a dome of red Navajo sandstone. The result is the Rock House: roughly 5,700 square feet of sculpted cave rooms sealed by curved, floor-to-ceiling glass that floods the interior with light and frames the cottonwoods outside.

It isn't a hotel and it isn't a campsite. It's a fully furnished, off-grid home on a working desert homestead, with an orchard and gardens, rescue horses and farm animals, a "Jam Room" lined with couches, rooftop views across the Grand Staircase, and a spring-fed swimming pond with a sand beach and a waterslide.

BeUTAHful Tours has partnered with the Bedrock Homestead to make it simple. We pick you up in Salt Lake City, drive you through some of the most scenic country in the American West, guide you into the backcountry, and bring you home. You just enjoy it.

UNLIKE ANYWHERE YOU'VE STAYED

— WHY THIS TRIP IS ONE OF A KIND

There's no other lodging like it in Utah. Pair it with a private guide and a world-class farm-to-table dinner, and you get a trip that's equal parts adventure, art, and quiet desert escape.

🪨

SLEEP INSIDE THE ROCK

Hand-sculpted sandstone bedrooms stay naturally cool in summer and warm in winter, thanks to passive solar heating through the glass walls.

🐴

A LIVING HOMESTEAD

Wander the orchard and gardens, meet the horses and farm animals, and hear the stories of the land from hosts who have lived here for decades.

🏜️

BACKCOUNTRY AT THE DOOR

Trails start right from the property, surrounded by slickrock domes, canyons, and the vast wilderness of Grand Staircase-Escalante.

🍽️

HELL'S BACKBONE GRILL

One evening we'll head to Boulder's famous farm-to-table restaurant, celebrated for cooking with ingredients grown on its own farm.

YOUR THREE DAYS

— WHAT TO EXPECT

Like every BeUTAHful tour, this trip is private and flexible. We'll adjust the pace and stops around your group's interests, the weather, and the best light.

DAY 1

SALT LAKE CITY TO THE HOMESTEAD

We pick you up at your hotel or chosen location in Salt Lake City and head south into red rock country, with scenic stops along the way. Arrive at the Bedrock Homestead in the afternoon, get a tour of the Rock House, and settle in for your first night under some of the darkest skies in the country.

DAY 2

BACKCOUNTRY HIKE & HELL'S BACKBONE GRILL

Spend the day exploring Grand Staircase-Escalante on a guided hike chosen for your group's ability, among slickrock, canyons, and cottonwood-lined creeks. Afterward, relax at the homestead or cool off in the swimming pond before an evening at Hell's Backbone Grill.

DAY 3

RETURN TO SALT LAKE CITY

Enjoy a slow morning on the homestead, then begin the drive home with optional stops along the way, such as:

  • Anasazi State Park Museum and its ancestral Puebloan village site
  • Scenic overlooks on Boulder Mountain
  • Capitol Reef National Park's petroglyphs and historic Fruita

YOUR TRIP, YOUR PACE

Think of this itinerary as a starting point, not a script. Because every trip is private, the schedule bends to fit your group: start later, linger longer at a favorite viewpoint, swap in a different stop on the drive home, or slow things down entirely. Just tell us what you're hoping to get out of your time at the Rock House, and we'll shape the days around it.
